Northern Brass is a unique hybrid of top class brass band players and acclaimed jazz musicians who came together for the first ever Durham Brass Festival in 2000. Since then the band has continued to develop its own distinctive style and programme.
Northern Brass comprises seven leading brass instrumentalists from the regions top brass bands plus two internationally acclaimed jazz musicians, Mark Nightingale (trombone) and Steve Waterman (trumpet & flugelhorn). Mark and Steve are two of the finest instrumentalists in Europe both possessing amazing technical and soloing abilities. Northern Brass is completed by a highly accomplished trio of piano, bass and drums.
Northern Brass is directed by John Warren a Canadian composer/arranger who has been working in Britain since the sixties. He is regarded as one the countries leading contemporary jazz composers and since 1968 has performed all over Europe and the Uk. John has also enjoyed a long association with saxophonist John Surman with whom he co led the highly acclaimed Brass Project.
