NEXT MONTH’S GIGS

“April,” wrote T S Eliot, “is the cruellest month” . . . I’m not sure it’s quite the wasteland he reckoned it to be, but it’s certainly relatively low key in jazz terms. There seems to be an assumption amongst promoters that audiences will be all jazzed out - not to mention stony broke - after the Gateshead Festival, and there’s no point in putting on anything very much until several weeks have elapsed. So the month’s two most high profile gigs both come at the very end, with NeWt at the Cluny on 29th and Killer Shrimp at the Corner House the following night (they might have made an interesting aquatic double bill).

Not that there aren’t plenty of high quality local bands on offer, with the first ever outing by John Warren’s new Splinter Group (Side Café on the 7th) particularly intriguing. Zoé Gilby and Extreme Measures both put in appearances, while hard-core improviser Rhodri Davies – now a Newcastle resident – takes his harp to a party at Morden Tower. And there are some fringe events as well, with Mavis Staple and a banjo extravaganza at the Sage (but not simultaneously, which might have been interesting), and a couple of jazz-friendly poets at Live Theatre.

NEXT MONTH’S GIGS

After the near jazz drought of April, here comes the deluge. The Sage in particular has a multifarious array of treats in store, with Christine Tobin and Jason Moran sandwiched between more left field contributions from The Necks and free jazz whirlwind Mick Beck . . . and then ending with a superstar meeting between the McCoy Tyner Trio and Joe Lovano.. 

But don't blow all your jazz money at the Sage, because other promoters are also coming up with the goods. Schmazz have a ferocious double bill of Led Bib and The Hub on the 6th, followed near the end of the month by all-star sextet Disassembler, while Jazz North East and Darlington Arts Centre both feature the Michael Garrick Sextet, back together for the first time since the 1970s. Even the unlikely venue of Witham Hall in Barnard Castle has a couple of excellent (and contrasting) gigs, the first with Robert Mitchell and Omar Puente, the second with the ubiquitous Alan Barnes.

Add in some great local bands of various persuasions, and you have a month to make any jazz lover busy and broke (but it'll be worth it).
