The Voice Of The North Jazz Orchestra features eighteen top musicians from across the north of England and has been brought together especially for this project by Jazzaction. The band will be under the direction of Dave Connolly and they will perform both big band classics such as “Skin Deep” and “In The Mood” as well as some of the more familiar themes from TV & film, which many of the children will recognise.

As well as performing the pieces the musicians will also give demonstrations of the individual instruments that make up a big band.  

Music teachers have for many years used music from TV adverts as a way to introduce classical music to children and this concert will feature big band pieces in a similar way, introducing jazz and big band repertoire.

Big bands are not remnants from the far distant past but a vital force in the many recording and TV studios around the world. VOTN will demonstrate the many instances that large ensembles are used in rock, pop, TV and film music.

It is hoped that the concert will give pupils and young musicians an insight into some of the techniques used in today’s music and also encourage many of them to appreciate LIVE music and to also consider learning to play a musical instrument.
