NEXT MONTH’S GIGS
As usual in January it takes a little while for the jazz scene to crank back into full action after the holiday break – not so much because the musicians and promoters are recovering from over-indulgence (as is well known, all members of the jazz community are models of sobriety and decorum), but because a combination of the uncertain weather and straitened finances can make it hard to attract much of an audience. Still, there are those willing to take the risk, and the weekly sessions at the Chillingham, Hoochie Coochie and the Bridge all resume at the earliest opportunity – in fact the ‘Splinter @ the Bridge’ programme includes one of the highlights of the month, when Noel Dennis digs out his leather trousers and giant shades to present music from the Miles Davis canon. I'm not normally enthusiastic about tribute gigs, but this should be well worth catching.
Another gig that should surely pull in a big crowd takes place at the Corner House on the 19th, when, working with his family, Jazz North East pays tribute to the late trumpeter, composer and arranger Mike Gilby, a key member of the North East jazz scene for many years. Then the following week there’s a very different JNE promotion when the rhythmically exciting improv quintet Gannets (or gaNNets, as they prefer to be known) come to Gateshead’s Central Bar.
In the southern part of our region the January gloom is likely to be compounded by the fact that the 20th marks the very last modern jazz gig at Darlington Arts Centre, as the Council has decided to sell the building, making all the staff redundant. But at least Peter Bevan, who has been responsible for the jazz programming for many years, is going out on a high, with the great Bobby Wellins returning after an absence of several years.
